Bar Restaurant La Montagne Noire - Saissac
Steeped in history, the iconic landmark restaurant La Montagne Noire is a well known and established traditional French dining spot. Famed for l’ecrevisse – crayfish, the restaurant was a tourist and local hotspot for the masses back as far as 1900!
Luckily, we discovered another ancient photograph of the exterior, thanks to a local historian. A vintage automobile sets the scene here, outside the front gate of La Montagne Noire. The black and white image shows that the exterior hasn’t changed much!

Cabardès

A.O.P. Cabardès

The Cabardès region is situated to the west of Languedoc and to the south of the central massif, a geologist's dream, balanced between east and west, the sun and the coolness, the heathland and the mountain. It is here that the winds cross. They bring the intense mediterranean heat necessary for southern "cépages" (grape types) such as syrah and grenache, and the cool atlantic humidity for the ocean "cépages": merlot, cabernet-sauvignon, cabernet-franc, cot and fer-servadou, to prosper. The vineyards and wines of Cabardès have been recognized as AOC since february 1999. The quality of the grapes, the wine-making, the blending of the "cépages" and the keeping of the wines has allowed us to obtain the best balance between fruit and structure, fullness and complexity, intensity and elegance. Cabardès assembles 30 châteaux and domaines over 500 productive hectares spread amongst 18 villages. 20000 hectolitres are produced each year,of which 60% are exported...

The Arboretum du Lampy, also known as the Arboretum du Domaine du Lampy-Neuf, is a private arboretum located in Le Lampy-Neuf, Saissac, Aude, Languedoc-Roussillon, France. It is open daily. Older trees include araucarias, Lawson cypresses, sequoiadendrons, thujas, and Virginia tulip trees; these have been augmented with new plantings of cedar of Lebanon, Gingko biloba, liquidambar, Negundo maple, olive, etc....

Lac du Lampy

Lac du Lampy - Saissac

The Lampy-neuf dam which was completed in 1782 is the second water reserve for the Canal after the Saint Ferréol Lake. Construction of the dam was necessary to supply the Canal de la Robine between Narbonne and Port la Nouvelle. The dam and the lake constituted part of the extension of the ingenious system of the Canal du Midi, one century after it opened. On the edges of the lake, the Arboretum du Lampy tells the stories of the Fables de la Fontaine in their natural setting, surrounded by centuries-old trees....

Sidobre

Sidobre - LE BEZ

North of the Montagne Noire, in the Tarn region, lies a mysterious area which is called the Sidobre. Here we find strange stone formations such as the so called trembling stones (Roches Tremblantes). The area is so old, that the first human being who set foot on this strange landscape, thought the place was sacred. Soon, the rocks were given names. Today it is a tourist attraction, complete with visitor center, walks and car roundtrips. The routes are clearly signposted...

Montolieu

Montolieu

Montolieu is a small, pretty village, which prides itself as being a 'village of books and graphic arts', and is a good place to browse through old books - there are perhaps 15 bokshops in the village, as well as a museum on the subject, and the possibility to learn about bookbinding. Stop anyway, even if you aren't interested in books, just for an amble around the village, in an attractive setting on a rocky outcrop between two rivers...
