Château et Remparts de la Cité de Carcassonne

2500 years of history !! The imposing fortifications of the citadel of Carcassonne occupy a rocky outcrop overlooking the course of the River Aude. At the foot of their walls stretches the lower town, a bastide founded in 1248 by Louis IX. Carcassonne has been a settlement since the 6th century BC and was a Roman town, fortified during the later imperial period, before becoming a medieval citadel. It has examples of 1,000 years of military architecture and 2,600 years of history. A rich and varied tour is available and includes many areas not otherwise visited: ramparts, hoardings, projection room, lapidary museum. Guided tours, lectures or audio-guides available, subject to booking...

Les Chasses au Trésor: Carcassonne

Les Chasses au Trésor: Carcassonne

Les Chasses au Trésor: malediction, mysteries and magic cards... Discover the region in a fun way and visit unusual or unmissable places thanks to a treasure hunt in the form of a box containing a magic card, mirror and / or other surprising clues. At the end of your adventure, a treasure awaits you... Be careful though: the treasure hunt makes you addicted! If you do one there is a good chance you will want to do more! We will have warned you... How it works ? It's very simple! Buy a “treasure hunters” box in one of the points of sale (often the town's tourist office). One box is sufficient for a family of 3/4 people or for a group of friends. Once the box in hand, you are in total autonomy. Inside the box are all the necessary items to complete your adventure. Our course last on average 1h30 but you are free to do it at your own pace. At the end of the adventure, remember to return to the tourist office (pay attention to the schedules) to collect your reward: the one, the real, the only treasure hunter badge to collect...

Carcassonne, la Bastide Saint-Louis

Carcassonne, la Bastide Saint-Louis

The Lower Town, also called Bastide Saint Louis, hides many treasures, whose names we mentioned before. All these witnesses of the History which are generally less celebrated than the monuments of the Cité, are however even interesting for those who know how to walk through narrow streets and get into a courtyard. Irony of History, Carcassonne is a town which seems to show a sort of dualism in its current aspect. Just like the cathar doctrine which flourished here seven centuries ago, and which was chased away and destroyed by the Inquisition. The jewel of today's Town, the bastide is hemmed by boulevards built in the 18th and 19th century over the old, once fortified town ditches. The military enclosure and the gates protect the ville basse or lower town. Its surrounding wall was built betwen 1355 and 1359, under the orders of the comte d'Armagnac; it was 2,800 metres long; the bastions were built after 1359; at that time, people simply erected in the corners some round-shaped towers, greater than the other parts of the wall...

Musée de l'Inquisition

Musée de l'inquisition - Carcassonne

In the heart of the city of Carcassonne, La Cité! In February 1231, Gregory IX published the constitution Excommunicamus, which prescribed life imprisonment for penitent heretics and the death penalty for stubborn heretics ... Usually, inquisitors were chosen from the new religious orders, Dominican and Franciscan. Exhibition of the sayings of the Inquisition Tower, instruments of torture of the French and Spanish Inquisitions. History and comparison of Catharism from the Middle Ages to the present day. History buffs and the curious will cross the threshold of this museum (in two separate buildings) in the heart of the City. Also named "Museum of Torture" to be more explicit, we advise sensitive souls to refrain! Not only will you get a glimpse of the instruments of torture dating from the 12th century up to the French Revolution, but you will also see scenes of torture recreated with mannequins in period costumes...
