Rieux and Val lies at the foot of the Val de Dagne and belonged to the abbey of Lagrasse in the twelfth century. At that time the village was surrounded by fortifications with the two main guarded gates. The walls and gates were demolished in 1759.

The bridge, Le pont de Rieux en Val, was built in the twelfth century and was intended for pedestrians, hence the steps and the narrow passage.

The bridge was also the setting of the film released in 1961: "Le miracle des loups" with Jean Marais.

Very beautiful village in the Val de Dagne; nicely equipped with a magnificent plane trees promenade. The surrounding area with its rich vineyards producing good table wines.

The tradition says that in the time of Charlemagne, his army was defeated by the advancing Saracens, who fought a "holy war" against Christians. Rieux-en-Val belonged to the abbey of Lagrasse until the early 12th century. Rieux-and-Val was an important former village that was surrounded by fortifications; marked by the two main gates, which were demolished in 1759. A large square tower dominates the village and was part of the fortifications.

- The old Roman bridge is a marvel of architecture of the 12th century.

- Northeast of Rieux-en-Val a menhir with a cross.

The Corbières is one of the wildest areas of France with one of the lowest population densities. It is picturesque with wine growing areas alternating with garigue and mountainous countryside. It is located mainly in the Aude département and partly in the Pyrénées-Orientales département. The River Aude borders the Corbières to the west and north. To the south is the River Agly and to the east the the Mediterranean Sea. The name Corbières comes from "cor" a pre-Celtic word meaning "rock" and "berre" from the River Berre which runs through Durban. The eastern part of the Corbières with its Etangs, borders the the Mediterranean Sea and is called the Corbières maritimes. It has its own distinctive climate and characteristic vegetation known as thermomediterranean vegetation...
