Rieux and Val lies at the foot of the Val de Dagne and belonged to the abbey of Lagrasse in the twelfth century. At that time the village was surrounded by fortifications with the two main guarded gates. The walls and gates were demolished in 1759.

The bridge, Le pont de Rieux en Val, was built in the twelfth century and was intended for pedestrians, hence the steps and the narrow passage.

The bridge was also the setting of the film released in 1961: "Le miracle des loups" with Jean Marais.

In short Rieux-en-Val is certainly worth a visit, because of the old buildings you find yourself quickly back 1,000 years in time.
