Corbières

A.O.C. Corbières

The Corbières is one of the wildest areas of France with one of the lowest population densities. It is picturesque with wine growing areas alternating with garigue and mountainous countryside. It is located mainly in the Aude département and partly in the Pyrénées-Orientales département. The River Aude borders the Corbières to the west and north. To the south is the River Agly and to the east the the Mediterranean Sea. The name Corbières comes from "cor" a pre-Celtic word meaning "rock" and "berre" from the River Berre which runs through Durban. The eastern part of the Corbières with its Etangs, borders the the Mediterranean Sea and is called the Corbières maritimes. It has its own distinctive climate and characteristic vegetation known as thermomediterranean vegetation...

Organic Wine

Organic Wine

The cornerstone of organic farming is the soil. Maintaining a healthy, biologically active soil is the main objective for an organic farmer. In the vineyard it means cultivating the soil and planting cover crops, instead of applying herbicides. It means using natural fertilizers, such as composted animal manure, versus chemical fertilizers. Organic growers use no synthetic growth-regulators (such as Alar). As for not using pesticides, the organic alternative is to encourage natural predators of insect pests instead of using poisonous insecticides. Organic farmers promote "biodiversity" and allow plants other than vines to grow in and around the vineyard. Biodiversity helps regulate the vineyard soil by attracting beneficial insects, spiders and predatory mites, as well as provide shelter and food (pollen, nectar and other bugs), and replaces the need for chemical pesticides or insecticides. What cannot be fully controlled through biodiversity can still be managed organically, through the use of naturally occurring plant or mineral extracts, which leave no residues in the soil. In wet climates the main difficulty is raised by the use of copper sulfate against mildew, which leaves over time levels of copper in the soil that need to be monitored....

Gorges du Termenet

Gorges du Termenet - Termes

Between the La Buade mill and Termes, the road, constructed in 1903, passes through two tunnels in the Gorges du Termenet cut by the Sou. The steep walls of the Gorges consist of rocks of the middle and lower Devonian periods. In the centre a beautiful vein of red marble runs the height of the cliffs. The Gorges is in a protected area. South of Termes, upstream of the Saint Andrew chapel and still on the Sou, there is another protected natural site -the gorge of Coyne Pont. This also cuts through rock of the lower Devonian period. The middle section forms a bowl and in part of the river bed a jumble of travertine rocks indicates a collapsed natural bridge. (Coyne Pont means "the cave bridge" in Occitan)...

Hôtel Restaurant La Fargo - St-Pierre-des-Champs

Halfway between Narbonne and Carcassonne near the village of St-Pierre-des-Champs and its château stands a beautiful, distinctive building nestled against the garrigue, surrounded by hills, gardens and orchards cradled by the Orbieu River and swaying to the pace of birdsong. In this haven of peace and greenery, the bright, personalised, spacious rooms with a contemporary South-East Asian-style décor, are an open invitation to a world of serenity. Indoors, in a décor of light stone walls, La Fargo features an extensive dining room with lounge, bar, fireplace and piano. The conformably-spaced round tables create a warm, relaxed atmosphere....

Château de Termes

Château de Termes - Termes

The site of Termes includes a charming small village, near two spectacular gorges, and of course, the rests of one of the best known fortresses of the history of the Crusade against the Cathars. We are not far away from the castles of Villerouge-Termenès and Arques nor from the village and abbey of Lagrasse as well. The castle of Termes was the administrative center of an important territorial district in XI th -XIII th centuries. The lords of Termes managed a powerful fortified village, under the donjon, and they showed themselves tolerant to the cathar heretics. 800 years ago, during the crusade against the cathars, the siege of Termes in 1210 by the army of Simon de Montfort made Termes famous: it was one of the longest sieges of this 20 years long war (1209-1229). At the end of the XIII° century, the castle was reorganized by the French royal power. From then, Termes was one of the castles wich protected France against spain : The " Five sons of Carcassonne"....

Rivière de St Laurent de la Cabrerisse

Rivière de St Laurent de la Cabrerisse

Amidst a magnificent landscape of vineyards, pine forests, olive trees and garrigue (Mediterranean scrubland), our village stretches along the river Nielle. Ideally located between Carcassonne and its famous fortified cité and Narbonne with both a remarkable cathedral and relaxing beaches to offer, our village deserves its double “label” of “Gate of the Hautes Corbieres” as well as “ Heart of the Corbieres-Minervois country”. You are only a few minutes away from Lagrasse, which abbey and middle-age cobbled streets have earned it a place on the list of France’s most beautiful villages. And there is plenty more to see : the abbeys of Fontfroide and Caunes Minervois are well worth a visit, not to forget the Cathar history of the region with the castles of Termes, Villerouge Termenes, Aquilair, Minerves and many more “vertigo citadels” all within a short drive of the village. The Canal du Midi and the Cité of Carcassonne are both inscribed on the Unesco World Heritage List. They offer beautiful opportunities for a half-day or daytrip in the sun....

Gorges de Caune-Pont (Gorges de Coynepont)

Gorges de Caune-Pont (Gorges de Coynepont) - Termes

The Château de Termes is a ruined castle near the village of Termes in the Aude département of the Languedoc. Built on a promontory it is defended on three sides by deep ravines. The ruins of the castle cover an area of 16.000m².
