  Specialities

All in all, Narbonne is not a bad destination...

True, it has none of the grandeur of Avignon or Carcassonne, but it’s still a pleasant place to wind up for a couple of days wandering around the old medieval core and its lively streets.
Narbonne’s glory days though, when the town was the capital and steaming metropolis of the entire Languedoc region, are long gone and today the town is a compact and satisfying sort of a place that’s home to just 47,000 people.
The quarely on the wine industry making the most of the renowned nearby vineyards of Corbières and La Clape...

La Clape

La Clape

The La Clape AOC is located where the Coteaux du Languedoc and Corbières appellations overlap and is well known for its vineyards that lie on a limestone outcropping that extends across the entire region. The region produces red, rose and white wines that are fully representative of the region and the reds show particularly well, often times considered a vin de garde. The majority of the wines of Gruissan are produced on the Clape. This little mountain, situated between Narbonne and Gruissan was an isle at the time of prehistoric man. The Clape, gets its name from the Occitan word « Clapas » meaning a pile of stones, and reaches a height of 214 m. The pine trees cover the slopes of the Clape. The garrigue covers the plateaux and the thyme, the rosemary and the lavender that invite you to promenade are what give the wines their character...

Vin de Pays d’Oc,
Vin de Pays de l’Aude

Vin de Pays d’Oc, Vin de Pays de l’Aude

Vin de Pays means 'country wine' to the French, but to outsiders it can mean New World with a French accent. These are the wines which the French authorities unreservedly allow to be labelled with the grape variety from which they were made. It is difficult to over-estimate the importance of this large and growing category of wines for the future of the French wine trade. The French themselves may have tended to see any Vin de Pays as distinctly inferior to any appellation contrôlée wine, whereas many of their customers abroad see the better Vins de Pays as good-value, user-friendly, sometimes high-quality non-conformist emissaries from the world's most revered wine producer....

Golf Pitch and
Putt Ste Rose

Golf Pitch and Putt Ste Rose - Narbonne

18-Holes.

18 Holes, Par 54, 1.200 metres, 1312 yards. Built in 1988 by Jean Pierre Basurco International standard. Narbonne is another of the Languedoc's best loved cities, and is set on the Mediterranean Coast, offering a chance to explore and enjoy a different aspect of the Aude. The club here is called Le Pitch 'n' Putt Sainte Rose, and although there is not a full golf course there is a very good eighteen-hole pitch and putt course, a driving range, pro shop and a clubhouse. It is really of more interest to holidaymakers and beginners than to serious golfers, but professional lessons are available, and competitions are held regularly...

Musée Archéologique de Narbonne

Musée Archéologique de Narbonne

The museum has been created in the Palais Vieux (Old Palace, 11th-12th centuries). Its prehistoric collections and relics depict the origins and ancient past of Narbonne and the surrounding area. The collection includes mosaics, statues, coffins, furnishings, a wooden anchor discovered in Narbonne's port, frescoes from the Clos de la Lombarde (a Gallo-Roman villa north of the town), all of which amount to the largest collection in Roman Gaul. On the first floor, the French ceilings dating from the start of the 19th century are not to be missed....

Abbaye de Fontfroide

Abbaye de Fontfroide - Narbonne

Immerse yourself for a day in the silent universe of the Cistercian Monks, who had only the cicadas’ song to distract them from contemplation. Standing in front of its high walls, it’s hard to imagine just how vast the Abbey is. Once you have passed the gate, the splendour of the ochre sandstone building will be revealed. It is one of the most beautiful Cistercian abbeys of France, founded in 1093 and saved from ruin in 1908 by art patrons Gustave and Madeleine Fayet. While discovering the dormitory and refectory, you will plunge into history and learn about the particularities of the Cistercian Order. You will find out, for instance, that the professed monks never met the conversi, or lay brothers, who were manual workers....

Cathédrale
Saint-Just et
Saint-Pasteur

Cathédrale Saint-Just et Saint-Pasteur - Narbonne

The High Gothic style of the Cathedral of Saint-Just and Saint-Pasteur takes its inspiration from the great cathedrals of Northern France. Its most striking feature is its unique choir, with vaulting soaring to more than 40 metres. It was built between 1272 and 1340 and remained unfinished because, in those troubled times, the Consuls refused to demolish the ramparts to provide stone to continue building. The side chapel, dedicated to Our Lady of Bethlehem, has a 14th-century altar-piece in painted stone. The Treasury, also known as the acoustic hall, displays a rich collection of liturgical objects, including ivories, gold and tapestries....

Musée Lapidaire

Musée Lapidaire - Narbonne

The collections of the Lapidary Museum are housed in the former church of Notre Dame de Lamourguier, the remains of a 13th-century Benedictine monastery and a fine example of Southern Gothic art. Some 1,300 blocks of stone form one of the largest collections in Europe. Most of them originate from Roman grave monuments which had been re-used as decoration for the town's ramparts (dismantled in the 19th century). A half-hour sound and light show projected onto the walls of the church retraces the history of Narbonne from antiquity to the Renaissance...
