The étang of Bages-Sigean - one of the typical lagoons of the French mediterranean coast. The kingdom of birds, realm of the pink flamingos. In antiquity, the river port of Narbonne was situated close to what is today the étang de Bages-Sigean. At the time the étang was a vast gulf, open to the sea where ships from across the mediterranean weighed anchor. It was called Lacus Rubresus by the Romans because of the alluvial silt, coloured by red earth from the high valley of the Aude. The gulf was protected by the islands of St Martin, St Lucie (which now belongs to the coastal conservation area) and La Clape, today joined to the mainland. . In the 15th century the gulf transformed into the lagoon, or étang we know today, covering 5500 hectares. It is linked to the sea by the narrow inlet of Port-la-Nouvelle. After many centuries as centre of a flourishing maritime commerce, the étang is now home to professional fishing boats - the traditional flat-bottomed bétous. Pleasure craft are also welcome (the traditional catalans) and professionals in nautical sports and activities propose courses and events all year round. Boating is an excellent way to get the most out of your visit to this magnificent natural landscape which shelters an exceptional flora and fauna, at the origin of the creation of the Narbonnaise en Méditerranée regional natural park.

Bages is one of the prettiest villages in the Aude located on the coast, not far from Narbonne, which is still shunned by mass tourism. Bages, a fishing village, has about 700 inhabitants and dates from the 11th century belongs with the lake (Etang) to the Regional Natural Park of Narbonne. The Aude coastline is today still remained relatively preserved. Indeed, despite the construction of several sandy beaches, places eg. Bages and Peyriac-de-Mer has still retain their identity.

The mosaic of landscapes offers beautiful paintings of the area with its etangs (lakes), sea, mountains, islands, lagoons, flora (350 species of birds have been spotted here), channels ... mass tourism is far away. Covers 12,000 ha area of land and sea between fresh, brackish and salt water. Several villages occupy the banks of etangs, including those of Bages and Peyriac de Mer. At the heart of the medieval district of Bages, they gave the streets and alleys evocative names like Rue des Pecheurs, Rue du Cadran, du Castel ... these offer stunning vistas of the surrounding area at Les Etangs, la montagne Catalane du Canigou and memorable sunsets...

La Forêt
de Fontfroide

La Forêt de Fontfroide - Narbonne

The original religious foundation on this site was a Benedictine establishment. The position is in a classic situation for a Benedictine abbey, tucked into a narrow, sheltered valley remote from the outside world. It is located in the Corbières area in the Aude département, just off the Autoroute between Narbonne and Carcassonne. The Cistercian Abbey of Fontfroide was founded in 1145, and became one of the most important and richest Cistercian abbeys in the Midi. It was the murder of a monk from Fontfroide, the papal legate Pierre de Castelnau, at dawn, on the 15th of January 1208, that provided Pope Innocent III with his pretext for the Cathar Crusade. Olivier de Termes is though to be buried here in the chapel of Saint Bernard (dedicated to Bernard of Clairvaux), which he founded. One of Fontfroide's abbots, Jacques Fournier, became Bishop of Pamiers in 1317 and a keen inquisitor (responsible for the arrest of the village of Montaillou)...
