The plateau of Barroubio can be found in the department of Hérault within the commune of Saint Jean de Minervois. It declines regularly to the south from 300 down to 200 metres high. The most rare of the French muscats... The Muscat of Saint Jean de Minervois guaranteed vintage-growing area is an approximately 180-hectare site in the northeastern corner of the Minervois vintage.
Domaine de Barroubio - Saint-Jean-de-Minervois
Human occupation at Barroubio dates back to prehistoric times. Evidence has been found of stone-age hatchets and flints inside stone shelters as well as sepulchral caves. At the Northeast limit of Minervois, the hamlet of Barroubio is 300 metres high, making it a "Causse" wine growing area.

Among the 60-hectare of the property, 27 are dedicated to the vineyard. The muscat petit grain, with 17 hectares, takes the largest part. The other varieties of vines - Grenache, carignan and syrah - are used to elaborate the red and rosé wines.

  Specialties

The area is home to the only pair of Eagles of Bonelli in the Minervois as well as many other wild species: blue blackbirds, falcons, alpine swifts and cliff swallows. It is an area of great ecological interest: the preserved gorges are home to many varieties of wild animals and vegetation.

The chapel of Saint Jean de Dieuvaille (also known as the Hole church) dates back from the 13th century. But the existence of a religious building dates back much further: records show that in 940 ad, the archbishop of Narbonne passed the church to the authority of the Abbey of Saint Pons. The roof was refurbished in 1977 and the small chapel was used for funeral ceremonies up until 1985.

Domaine de Barroubio is located in the hamlet Barroubio at St. Jean de Minervois. Here the family Miquel has been vineyards since the 15th century. Seemingly only a few houses, tucked into the landscape of the Herault. In his own words by Miquel, the family has been five hundred years in winemaking.

Minervois

A.O.C. Minervois

The Minervois is one of the most ancient vineyards of the Mediterranean region. Indeed, its land was chosen by the Romans as providing ideal conditions for the first vines they planted in Languedoc Roussillon. Its name comes from the ancient city of Minerve, a stronghold built by the Romans and dedicated to the goddess Minerva. Since that time, many amphora shards and vestiges of cellars have been discovered, testimony to the importance of this vineyard. The region, austere in winter and redolent with sunshine in summer, has survived over the centuries its invasions by barbarians, Arabs and Christians. The essence of Minervois la Livinière, as in so many Midi appellations, is the blend; a marriage of different grape varieties that adds subtle nuance of flavour to the whole. Natural alcohol level must reach a minimum of 12% without enrichment (so no chaptalisation) and maximum yield is a modest 45 hl/ha. Ageing may be in barrel or vat, and unlike basic Minervois, the wine must be bottled at source, so cannot be sent off to a négociant elsewhere in France...

The Grapes

The Grapes

There are thousands of grape varieties contributing to a vast array of different wine styles with each variety having its own distinct flavours and characteristics. Varieties can be made uniquely to make a wine, in whch case the wine is known as a varietal, or collectively with other varities, when the wine is known as a blend. The soils and ‘terroirs’ in the Aude area are very varied, from Schist, Sandstone, Marl, Gravel, Pebbles, Limestone, to Granit and Alluvial soil; thus making many marvelous and different styles of wine. Also in this massive area are many different grape varieties, the reds include Carignon, Cinsault, Granache Noir, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. The whites, Chardonnay, Granache blanc, Picpoul, Marsanne, Roussanne, Vermantino, Mauzac, Chenin and Clairette...

Musée Hurepel de Minerve

Musée Hurepel de Minerve - Minerve

Using dioramas (original figurines presented in various scenes), the museum tells the story of the tragic saga of the Occitan Cathars. In the 13th century, the catholic princes, spurred on by Pope Innocent III, decided to put an end to Cathar influence in the provinces of Languedoc, Simon de Montfort came to impose the law and the catholic faith in Languedoc by force and fire. The local barons and knights then took up arms to defend their land, their faith and their culture. Following many years of combat, they lost their independence and were forced, in humiliation, to witness the martyrdom of the Cathars under their protection, who were burnt at the stake on enormous pyres...
