Château Ricardelle - Narbonne

Château Ricardelle is located between the vineyards just south of Narbonne. The history of the domain dates back to 1342. According to the annals, at least from 1696 wine is made. Ricardelle now covers 36 hectares. Ricardelle is located in the small wine region La Clape, in the south of France against the coast. From 1985 it is an Appelation Contrôlée under the name Languedoc La Clape.
Château Ricardelle - Narbonne
In 2015, La Clape obtained the status of a separate appelation. The wines are now sold as AOP La Clape. The current owner, Bruno Pellegrini, was born in the North of Italy. His mother spoke German, hence he now controls Italian, German and French. Pellegrini has made his career in the wine trade, especially the sect. He worked in Germany for years, where he bought the wine for, among others, Aldi. In 1990 he bought Château Ricardelle, including the surrounding vineyards. Wine production was characterized in the past by high quantity and low quality.

Pellegrini has, with his winemaker, opted for a very different strategy, low yield (in quantity) and high quality. This by cutting much more, removing small grapes etc. Production is now about 25% of the past. They now make about 200,000 bottles a year. For example, approximately 8,000 bottles of the Blason are produced annually. The daughter of Pellegrini and his son-in-law (Thomas Nègre) run the company nowadays. The wine cellar contains some large concrete cuves, this in addition to new steel cuves and wooden barriques. The concrete cuves are used and, according to Pellegrini, this is becoming more and more common. The advantage is that the temperature is better preserved.

The wine gets warmer during fermentation and that is beneficial for the process. A number of other concrete cuves have been demolished. Pellegrini processes a lot of Carignan in its wines. Is a true indigenous species that is doing very well in the climate. The Syrah grape really had to adapt, initially it was not a success. All their red wines are made from Syrah, Grenache and Carrignan. Well in different combinations. The Blason for example has 70% Syrah, while the Combemale has about 40% Syrah. This makes the wines of Château Ricardelle recognizable and still different.

La Clape

La Clape

The La Clape AOC is located where the Coteaux du Languedoc and Corbières appellations overlap and is well known for its vineyards that lie on a limestone outcropping that extends across the entire region. The region produces red, rose and white wines that are fully representative of the region and the reds show particularly well, often times considered a vin de garde. The majority of the wines of Gruissan are produced on the Clape. This little mountain, situated between Narbonne and Gruissan was an isle at the time of prehistoric man. The Clape, gets its name from the Occitan word « Clapas » meaning a pile of stones, and reaches a height of 214 m. The pine trees cover the slopes of the Clape. The garrigue covers the plateaux and the thyme, the rosemary and the lavender that invite you to promenade are what give the wines their character...
