A vineyard is made of parcels of vines in different types of soil in a particular geographic location in climate. These two factors define the soil that is part of a landscape and a region. Mattes is the place where the vines have been since 2000 years. In the Languedoc region of the Corbières near the Mediterranean sea where the domain extends over 615 ha seems to be the region of France where the mosaic of soils is the largest. More than 23 different soils were identified and they guarantee the diversity of our wines.
Château de Mattes-Sabran - Portel des Corbières
Our 90 acres vineyard is composed of more or less 30 plots of 3 acres each distributed in two parts: The plain part called "en bas" near the Berre river with deep loamy soils is 27 acres wide.

The AOC part is about 60 acres large and surrounds the house. It has two distinct areas: a very gritty alluvial terrace called " le plateau" that is very similar to Chateauneuf du Pape. The second one is more heterogeneous with limestone and marl soils . In this area , our plots are more scattered , to keep the best ones ..

It was the Romans who brought vines in Gaul. Narbonne was one of their major city by the sea. From its port wines were sent to India.

The Roman road, the famous VIA DOMITIA, that run from Susa in Italy to Girona in Spain, goes through the domain for about 3 km, as did the highway 30 years ago. We still can see it traces.

In the Middle Ages, Mattes was part of the Cistercian Abbey of Lagrasse. It was first mentioned in a document from year 1102. It also shows on this old map from 1644.

At first and until 1914, Mattes was part of a larger domain as big as 4000 acres. During the Revolution, he was owned by Josephine Anne de Sabran, widow of the Marquis de Monteil, famous sailor of Louis XVI. He can be considered as the La Fayette for the Navy as he actively participated to the war of independence.

Childless, she decided to bequeath Mattes to her nephew, Marc Edward de Sabran Ponteves known as the Duke of Narbonne or the good Duke for his kindness. The domain was divided on the eve of the 1914 war, and became the property of his great-granddaughter, Alyette of Lareinty-Tholozan, born in Guermantes, in 1890.
Since 1733, Mattes has never been sold.

Corbières

A.O.C. Corbières

The Corbières is one of the wildest areas of France with one of the lowest population densities. It is picturesque with wine growing areas alternating with garigue and mountainous countryside. It is located mainly in the Aude département and partly in the Pyrénées-Orientales département. The River Aude borders the Corbières to the west and north. To the south is the River Agly and to the east the the Mediterranean Sea. The name Corbières comes from "cor" a pre-Celtic word meaning "rock" and "berre" from the River Berre which runs through Durban. The eastern part of the Corbières with its Etangs, borders the the Mediterranean Sea and is called the Corbières maritimes. It has its own distinctive climate and characteristic vegetation known as thermomediterranean vegetation...

Vin de Pays d’Oc,
Vin de Pays de l’Aude

Vin de Pays d’Oc, Vin de Pays de l’Aude

Vin de Pays means 'country wine' to the French, but to outsiders it can mean New World with a French accent. These are the wines which the French authorities unreservedly allow to be labelled with the grape variety from which they were made. It is difficult to over-estimate the importance of this large and growing category of wines for the future of the French wine trade. The French themselves may have tended to see any Vin de Pays as distinctly inferior to any appellation contrôlée wine, whereas many of their customers abroad see the better Vins de Pays as good-value, user-friendly, sometimes high-quality non-conformist emissaries from the world's most revered wine producer....

Les Terrasses
de la Berre

Les Terrasses de la Berre - Portel des Corbières

The owners of Les Terrasses de la Berre gives you a warm welcome. This charming restaurant is a small cosy place with a fireplace, badly needed, because it was lashing rain outside. They have a lovely menu. Salads for starters, a selection of lovely local cheeses and its majesty, the local specialty Cassoulet, what a culinary experience. Nice place, in a nice village, run by lovely people and fantastic food.... you happen to pass by, this is a must try place... The restaurant has multiple small terraces overlooking the Berre. Note that the unusable terraces are the days of high winds. Summer must be reserved for certain of being placed...

Musée Archéologique de Peyriac-de-Mer

The Archaeological Museum de Peyriac-de-Mer, created by Henri Fabre in 1955, it brings together the product of excavations by the latter with Henri Barbouteau. Many traces show an occupation around the Doul since prehistoric times. The sarcophagus remains of St Paul reminds the implantation site of the old church and the location of the original village. In Gallo-Roman times, a habitat has been organized on the oppidum of the mill. The excavations have delivered a magnificent collection of amphorae and many everyday items. Finally, many vestiges of Roman colonization were found at the site of the ancient villas located near the Domitian...

Auberge
du Vieux Puits

Auberge du Vieux Puits - Fontjoncouse

If you love excellent food and wine, then there can be no finer restaurant in the South of France as Auberge du Vieux Puits. This 3 star Michelin restaurant is run by the celebrated French chef, Gilles Goujon. I can not recommend this restaurant highly enough. The food, the service, the wine, the cheese . . . all were excellent. Nobody has given Gilles Goujon anything for free. On the contrary. In a bucolic atmosphere far from the mundane noise, in an austere building –sold by the tiny Town Hall– he has been progressively restoring for a decade, he has been able to captivate plenty of customers and reach the top of the French guides: 5 hats in Gault Millau and 3 stars in Michelin. We can say we are before a self-made man who had to fight and sweat blood to reach fame; a fame very few chefs deserve so clearly....
