  Specialities

Sandwiched between the ugly ports of Nouvelle and Barcarès, Leucate plage comes as a very pleasant surprise. It feels more like an Australian beach town just outside Sydney - with relatively attractive houses climbing up pretty fir-covered hills. There are two beaches here, a main, large beach just in front of the town, and, further along (accessible only by climbing round the rocks), a much slimmer beach bordered by rocks that is popular with nude bathers and, at the very end, gay men. Leucate is also popular with wind surfers, and boards can be hired in the town.

Port Leucate is basically an enormous holiday development, with not-too-unattractive orange and beige holiday blocks laid out amongst neatly manicured gardens. The beach is long and very deep, separated from the developments behind by a well-tended boardwalk, popular with roller skaters. The sand is gritty (like most of the Perpignan beaches) and suddenly slopes just before the water's edge. There's plenty of parking, and lots of restaurants, bars and a few shops. Even mini-golf is not far away.

Fitou

Fitou A.O.C.

The first "Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée" wine of Languedoc-Roussillon, is only produced in nine small communal areas: FITOU, Caves, Treilles, Leucate and La Palme, which are all beside the sea, between Narbonne and Perpignan, and Cascastel, Paziols, Tuchan, and Villeneuve in the Corbières-Massif. Documents going back as far as Philip Augustus, Louis XIII and Louis XIV bear witness to the long-standing reputation of Fitou wines.Rabelais particularly appreciated "vin de Palme" which now has the "Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée Fitou" label. he vineyards in Fitou are set out on shaly and argilocalcareous soils with exceptional exposure to the sun. The countryside, whose relief consists in parts of hills and slopes and in others of plateaux, has the advantage of a particularly dry climate and is often swept by a high wind, the "Cers"...

Muscats du Languedoc

A.O.C. Muscats du Languedoc

Muscat de Rivesaltes is an appellation for the historic vins doux naturels from a relatively large area of Roussillon, in southern France, covering a total of 99 communes, and the majority of the Pyrenees-Orientales administrative departement. It is the largest single sweet wine appellation in France. Muscat de Rivesaltes wines are made predominantly from Muscat Blanc a Petit Grains and Muscat d'Alexandrie in varying ratios, according to the style desired by the individual producer. Muscat Blanc a Petits Grains is used to bring aromas of exotic and citrus fruits while Muscat d'Alexandrie brings a deeper bouquet of white flowers and ripe stone fruit. Collectively the wines show aromas of peach, lemon, mango and occasionally fresher, herbaceous notes like mint. These aromas all change with ageing, (which take place mostly in the bottle to preserve the fresher aromas) and the wines take on aromas of honey and baked stone fruits...

Muscat
de Rivesaltes

Muscat de Rivesaltes

Rivesaltes is the birthplace of the vin doux naturel, a creation of Arnaud de Villeneuve, the eminent 13th Century physician. It was he who discovered the process of halting the alcoholic fermentation by the addition of spirit to the must, thus giving rise to a new breed of wine. The technique has since been employed in the production of Rivesaltes, and over the ensuing centuries there have been numerous literary references to these fortified wines, which seem to have been highly regarded. Today there are 94 communes eligible to produce these wines, mostly in the Pyrénées-Orientales, although with nine situated in the Aude. The wines start off as principally red or white - although blending of red and white varieties, and subsequent barrel ageing, may influence the wine's true colour and eventual style significantly. Grenache Noir is the lead variety for the red wines, but this may be blended with a number of white varieties, including Grenache Blanc and Gris, Maccabeu and Tourbat...

Forteresse
de Salses

Forteresse de Salses - Salses-le-Château

This fortress was built between 1497 and 1504 on the order of Ferdinand the Catholic, King of Aragon, to keep France out of the Roussillon region. It was intended to replace the square castle with 27 metre sides located on a nearby peak. This small fortification was ill adapted to the art of warfare as it had developed at the end of the 15th century when metal ball artillery came into use. Designed by Francisco Ramiro Lopez, the king’s first artilleryman, the fortress of Salses is a masterpiece of military architecture, a notable example of the transition from medieval château (the fortress has a keep and round towers framing long curtains) to modern fortress (it is strictly geometrical with deep foundations). The property of the French State since 1930, the fortress of Salses is managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux, which opens the monument to the public. Some 100,000 people visit the fortress every year....
