Les Libellules de Montolieu - Montolieu

Les Libellules de Montolieu - Montolieu

Welcome to "Les Libellules" the self catering Gîte named for the Dragonflies that can be seen flying over the river right next to our garden. Situated between Carcassonne and Toulouse. Near Carcassonne but not under the flight path, we have the luxury of being near to the airport (20 kms) but still being tranquil and quiet.

The village of Montolieu (the name comes from the occitan Mont a Ouliou - Mount of Olives) is situated in the foothills of the Montagne Noir, that's about 16 kms from the city of Carcassonne, with its wonderfully preserved medieval castle.

The location makes "Les Libellules de Montolieu" the perfect base for your visits to the restaurants and vineyards of the largest wine growing area of France and for house hunting in one of the most picturesque settings in the Languedoc.
  Specialities

Montolieu is known the world over as "Le Village de Livre" (The Village of Books) and has been a centre for book selling and binding since 1989. There are many shops selling books both ancient and modern and a museum that specializes in the history of everything to do with books.

The village resides on an outcropping of rock high above two rivers, the "Alzeau" and the "Dure". They join just above our house by a small waterfall easily visible from our rear balcony and continues on as "La Rougeanne" which runs directly by the garden. The decking in the lower garden is therefore provided one of the best water features possible, and something very important to remember, the Mosquitoes are not to be found in abundance as the river flows quite rapidly.

It's a wonderful place to spend quality time just relaxing and enjoying the peace and quiet of the Languedoc as we have very little traffic passing by the house. It's situated in a small Chemin leading to a farm about 1 km distant. The swimming pool is available from May to September and during that time doesn't require heating and can reach 29° C. After a day sightseeing it's great to just cool down. Although this is a self catering holiday there are plenty of excellent restaurants nearby. In Montolieu, within easy walking distance, there are 2 restaurants, a café, the usual grocery store (Chez Nelly), a Patisserie and a Tabac.

However it's not just the books, wine and restaurants that attract visitors to Montolieu, there are also the Chateaux and ancient Castles of the Cathares situated nearby, the Cité of Carcassonne is an amazing site to visit, the Mediterranean and it's beaches are less than an hour away, Spain and Andorra beckon and are also only a couple of hours by car.

Cabardès

A.O.C. Cabardès

The Cabardès region is situated to the west of Languedoc and to the south of the central massif, a geologist's dream, balanced between east and west, the sun and the coolness, the heathland and the mountain. It is here that the winds cross. They bring the intense mediterranean heat necessary for southern "cépages" (grape types) such as syrah and grenache, and the cool atlantic humidity for the ocean "cépages": merlot, cabernet-sauvignon, cabernet-franc, cot and fer-servadou, to prosper. The vineyards and wines of Cabardès have been recognized as AOC since february 1999. The quality of the grapes, the wine-making, the blending of the "cépages" and the keeping of the wines has allowed us to obtain the best balance between fruit and structure, fullness and complexity, intensity and elegance. Cabardès assembles 30 châteaux and domaines over 500 productive hectares spread amongst 18 villages. 20000 hectolitres are produced each year,of which 60% are exported....

Vin de Pays d’Oc,
Vin de Pays de l’Aude

Vin de Pays d’Oc, Vin de Pays de l’Aude

Vin de Pays means 'country wine' to the French, but to outsiders it can mean New World with a French accent. These are the wines which the French authorities unreservedly allow to be labelled with the grape variety from which they were made. It is difficult to over-estimate the importance of this large and growing category of wines for the future of the French wine trade. The French themselves may have tended to see any Vin de Pays as distinctly inferior to any appellation contrôlée wine, whereas many of their customers abroad see the better Vins de Pays as good-value, user-friendly, sometimes high-quality non-conformist emissaries from the world's most revered wine producer....

Musée des Arts et Métiers du Livre

Musée des Arts et Métiers du Livre - Montolieu

Just 17 kilometres north-west of Carcassonne, perched on a rocky outcrop between the Dure and Alzeau gorges stands Montolieu, village of books. For the past 20 years, all year round, its second-hand and antiquarian bookshops have been welcoming visitors who are keen readers and book lovers. The Museum of Book Arts and Crafts is open throughout the year and offers a fascinating journey through the history of books, from the earliest writing and developments in writing media, right down to the invention of printing.

Cactuseraie
d'Escaïre Figue

Cactuseraie d'Escaïre Figue - Montolieu

Whether you're an experienced collector, a beginner or just someone who is curious, you will find in the Aude region a place that is quite unique. The setting is exceptional and here nature is still carefully preserved. Here, growing in pots or directly in the ground is a cactus trail; most of them are planted outside, throughout the year in flowerbeds. There are about 2,000 varieties to discover. (Group tours available by prior arrangement.) Sales of plants, garden design advice, etc. It's a unique chance to come and explore a world of little-known shapes and colours....

Casquette et Chapeau

Casquette et Chapeau - Montolieu

Casquette et Chapeau is a charming restaurant in the heart of Montolieu, le village du livre. It is typical of many such restaurants in villages across France, looking unremarkable and unexciting until you sample what it has to offer. Situated in a small square opposite the church, the best tables for lunch are outside under the shade of the plane trees, but the interior is also airy and welcoming. Service is as it should be, neither too fast nor too slow, and with just the right amount of attention. Remarkably, for France, customers without a reservation were welcomed at 2.00pm without fuss, which makes this restaurant even more exceptional than most...

Club 620

Club 620 - Fontiers-Cabardès

A small village bar-restaurant where you eat well, without fuss. Traditional dishes and a varied menu. Yvan Marié, the owner, likes to work stews. Diners are treated to a good stew, a Burgundian, a coq au vin or a good onion soup in the winter, grilled over a wood fire as the breast and large salad as 620 with the gizzards, sliced foie gras and pork summer, all in a festive atmosphere. All year held musical evenings. Saturdays in winter and twice a week in summer, music lovers and players of cards or billiards seasoned mix musicians, sometimes known names of French and international scene. All this small world alongside in the right mood at the counter or on the terrace, shaded groves. Sires sad, so go your way....
