Les Appaloosas du Pech - Montouliers

Discover the beautiful Minervois on unique Appaloosa horses... with the stables and breeding centre “Les Appaloosas du Pech”

At the Appaloosas du Pech, between the beautiful villages of Montouliers and Bize-Minervois on the border between the Herault and the Aude, we offer trail rides from one hour to three days, exploring the beautiful Minervois with its vines, hills, rivers and stunning views. We cater for all levels of rider and our horses are happy, well-cared for and kind. Many of our horses were bred and trained by us and most are beautiful “spotted” appaloosa horses, known for their hardiness, good sense and calmness.

For longer trail rides, which can include beach riding and swimming on horseback, delicious meals are included in the prices. Accommodation overnight is in comfortable chalets or tents.

There is something very special about swaying back and forth, side to side in a worn saddle, meandering through a cool forest on a hot summer’s day.

We take our homestay students to visit a ranch and let them enjoy a one hour guided horseback ride through the hillside.

Minervois

A.O.C. Minervois

The Minervois is one of the most ancient vineyards of the Mediterranean region. Indeed, its land was chosen by the Romans as providing ideal conditions for the first vines they planted in Languedoc Roussillon. Its name comes from the ancient city of Minerve, a stronghold built by the Romans and dedicated to the goddess Minerva. Since that time, many amphora shards and vestiges of cellars have been discovered, testimony to the importance of this vineyard. The region, austere in winter and redolent with sunshine in summer, has survived over the centuries its invasions by barbarians, Arabs and Christians. The essence of Minervois la Livinière, as in so many Midi appellations, is the blend; a marriage of different grape varieties that adds subtle nuance of flavour to the whole. Natural alcohol level must reach a minimum of 12% without enrichment (so no chaptalisation) and maximum yield is a modest 45 hl/ha. Ageing may be in barrel or vat, and unlike basic Minervois, the wine must be bottled at source, so cannot be sent off to a négociant elsewhere in France...

Vin de Pays d’Oc,
Vin de Pays de l’Aude

Vin de Pays d’Oc, Vin de Pays de l’Aude

Vin de Pays means 'country wine' to the French, but to outsiders it can mean New World with a French accent. These are the wines which the French authorities unreservedly allow to be labelled with the grape variety from which they were made. It is difficult to over-estimate the importance of this large and growing category of wines for the future of the French wine trade. The French themselves may have tended to see any Vin de Pays as distinctly inferior to any appellation contrôlée wine, whereas many of their customers abroad see the better Vins de Pays as good-value, user-friendly, sometimes high-quality non-conformist emissaries from the world's most revered wine producer....

Restaurant
Le Chat Qui Pêche

Restaurant Le Chat Qui Pêche - Argeliers

Outside dining along the canal... Restaurant Le Chat Qui Pêche in Argeliers looks fantastically rustic from the outside, and this is continued inside. Don't let that put you off - if you want hearty, simple food, then this is the place for you. It's quite inexpensive as well, so that's always a bonus. The location, though - WOW. Situated on one side of the fabulous tree-lined Canal du Midi, the bridge over the canal is one of the biggest single-arch canal bridges I've ever seen. Add to that the fact that the restaurant faces the canal and has a shady patio out front and to the side, and you got possibly the most idyllic setting, with long evening sunsets and several boats put-putting past to add to the atmosphere. In all, a very pleasant experience, reasonably priced, and well served by friendly staff. Worth seeking out...
