Espéraza is in the Aude département, lying on a tight meander of the River Aude, just north of the foothills of the Pyrenees. The main arterial road, the D118, passes near the town, out of sight and hearing. The town is 6 km from Quillan to the South, and 15 km from Limoux to the north. It is the perfect base for those interested in Cathar Country.

Attractions include water sports on the River Aude which flows through the town, a large Sunday Market, and a unique dinosaur museum displaying some of the spectacular finds made nearby. There is also a Grade I listed Church in the town square. The town lies in the very heart of Cathar Country, the location of some of the most important events of medieval Europe, vestiges of which can be seen everywhere. Many of the most famous Cathar sites are only a short drive or cycle ride away. Espéraza is less than a two hours' walk away to the hilltop village of Rennes-le-Château.

Popular activities include walking, climbing, and caving. The area is a delight for those seeking active holidays. Cycling, the French national sport, is the most popular. And there's horse riding, hang-gliding, white-water rafting, kayaking and canoeing, canyoning, hunting, hawking and shooting, angling and fishing, wind surfing and kitesurfing, paragliding, Snowkiting and hot air ballooning. In the winter, there's downhill skiing and cross-country skiing, as well as other winter sports in the Pyrenees, less than an hour's drive away.

Domaine Delmas - Antugnac

A.O.P. Limoux Blanquette de Limoux, Crémant de Limoux, Blanquette Méthode Ancestrale  Land of bubbles... at hillsides Fleche_bas It all began 3 generations ago: Omer Delmas grows 3 ha of vineyards which he has himself inherited from his father. Bernard, his son, a former cook, perpetuates and develops this familial tradition. Our familial estate is situated in the Haute Vallée Terroir, at the heart of the charming village of Antugnac. Its geographic situation with exceptional weather conditions is ideal for the production of the famous bubbles of Limoux, blanquette and crémant, that the winemakers of the Limoux area make with passion since several centuries. It is the very same passion that has allowed us to evolve with boldness and to take up the challenges of an independent production. As early as 1986, we decided to convert the totality of our vineyard into an organic agriculture, and this until today. In less than 30 years, our familial estate, driven by Bernard and Marlène and then with the help of the whole team, has seen a very important development in terms of surface of the vineyards, range of products and modernization of the production tools. Today, it represents 31 hectares of vineyard and around 160 000 bottles per a year sold in France and Abroad...

Château d'Antugnac

Château d'Antugnac - Antugnac

A.O.P. Limoux  Within the vast wineyard of the Languedoc, the Château d'Antugnac now operates 95 hectares on the Limoux appellation area in the Haute-Vallée de l'Aude. This specific region is located at the extreme south-west of the Languedoc vineyards, at the foot of the Pyrenees in a zone where climatic influences, Mediterranean and Atlantic, blend together. This is a magical place and it seduced on the spot the Collovray & Terrier, enamored of the grand landscapes and the Cathar relief. In the middle of other rather exotic grape varieties for people born in the Mâconnais, we find in the Aude Valley the famous Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, icons of Burgundy: that is a considerable argument to conquer these new terroirs and learn from their specificities. It doesn't boil down to the blanquette in Limoux! For a long time in the shadow of the sparkling wines -the famous Blanquette de Limoux whose date of birth goes back to 1531-the still wines from the Limoux region have managed to opt for originality based on the coexistence between the Atlantic and Mediterranean grape varieties and on the local microclimate. Here, the vines are planted on terroirs whose altitude varies between 200 to 600 meters, which allows to temper the summer heats. This zone of climatic confluence enjoys an optimum sunshine due to the Mediterranean influence, cool nights because of the proximity of the Pyrenees, a good ventilation generated by the Tramontane and a balanced rainfall due to the ocean influences...

Rennes les Bains

Rennes les Bains

In the early days in the Corbières at Rennes-les-Bains, when people were converted they were baptised. This was an essential major ceremony of the new Christianity and had the character of a covenant with God. Baptism washed away sin so one could begin a new life in which salvation and personal enlightenment were assured. Baptisms were whole body immersions and Mary was authorised to perform baptisms, unlike most women of the time. . . . complete immersion, including the hair, was the norm and among the observers, fellow Christians waiting to welcome the newcomer to the fold, one of them was appointed to ensure this complete immersion. The newcomer had to be completely naked. Then he or she was welcomed lovingly, with hugs and kisses, into the new Christian community. Where, 2,000 years ago in the region of Rennes-les-Bains, were there suitable places for whole body baptism? Just outside the town is the Fontaine d'Amours – lover's spring. If you bathe there together, your love will last forever. It's the tiniest mental leap here, from romantic love to everlasting and spiritual love. Did this legend come from the baptism, done in the new loving religion, that took place there, after which people hugged and kissed?..

Château des Ducs
de Joyeuses

Château des Ducs de Joyeuses - Couiza

This listed 16th century chateau is located on extensive grounds on the banks of the River Aude. The ancient fortress-turned-hotel subtly blends medieval tradition with modern confort - and it has an excellent restaurant too (it is important that you reserve a table in advance). The house was built by Jean de Joyeuse, first Governor of Narbonne and Lieutenant General in Languedoc, between 1540 and 1550, and his son, Guillaume III assumed the job of completing this magnificant chateau after he died. With a beautiful courtyard where one can dine in the summer months, the castle is a very special place to stay. With a swimming pool and tennis court, the hotel is a perfect base to combine relaxation with good food. Close to Cathares and 30 km to Carcassonne, there many cathedrals and historic monuments to visit. The Chateau does not have an elevator, so if you have a problem with stairs this may not be the best choice for you....
