Horreum Romain - Narbonne

The Horreum is the only building dating from classical times that can still be seen in Narbonne.

It is a former underground warehouse and dates from the end of the first century BC and was probably the below-ground section of a market.

Two of its galleries can be visited and the sound and light show that has been installed creates an atmosphere rather like that of a market-day.
Horreum Romain - Narbonne
Stone remains have been put on display in the alcoves that open off the north wing to remind visitors of the splendours of Narbo Martius, the capital of the Narbonne region.

You can buy a Pass Ticket, which is valid for 15 days and gives you entry to all the monuments and museums...
  Specialities

The Horreum romain, recognized as a museum in 1975 during its opening to the public is the only metropolitan example of Gallo-Roman underground warehouses of goods preserved almost in its entirety.

Its construction dates back to the 1st Century before J.C., and corresponds to a time when Narbonne was considered as "an observatory and rampart of the Romans" (Cicéron). It served as a warehouse for grain, wine and oil, and also to stock weapon because of the military importance of the city at this time.

During its developments in 1975, a part of its underground was always serving as a wine cellar. This place shows incredible qualities of humidity, and a good temperature for maturation, between 12 and 14 degrees...

La Clape

La Clape

The La Clape AOC is located where the Coteaux du Languedoc and Corbières appellations overlap and is well known for its vineyards that lie on a limestone outcropping that extends across the entire region. The region produces red, rose and white wines that are fully representative of the region and the reds show particularly well, often times considered a vin de garde. The majority of the wines of Gruissan are produced on the Clape. This little mountain, situated between Narbonne and Gruissan was an isle at the time of prehistoric man. The Clape, gets its name from the Occitan word « Clapas » meaning a pile of stones, and reaches a height of 214 m. The pine trees cover the slopes of the Clape. The garrigue covers the plateaux and the thyme, the rosemary and the lavender that invite you to promenade are what give the wines their character...

Corbières

A.O.C. Corbières

The Corbières is one of the wildest areas of France with one of the lowest population densities. It is picturesque with wine growing areas alternating with garigue and mountainous countryside. It is located mainly in the Aude département and partly in the Pyrénées-Orientales département. The River Aude borders the Corbières to the west and north. To the south is the River Agly and to the east the the Mediterranean Sea. The name Corbières comes from "cor" a pre-Celtic word meaning "rock" and "berre" from the River Berre which runs through Durban. The eastern part of the Corbières with its Etangs, borders the the Mediterranean Sea and is called the Corbières maritimes. It has its own distinctive climate and characteristic vegetation known as thermomediterranean vegetation...
