Château Villerambert-Julien - Caunes-Minervois

Château Villerambert-Julien draws its name from the Latin Villa Ramberti, which was situated on an ancient site surrounded by dolmens and menhirs close to the Via Domitia. When the soil was first deeply tilled Gallo-Roman amphorae and pottery were found. One must go back to 1231 to find written evidence of a vineyard at Villerambert under the feudal rule of Pierre Vidal de Villerambert, Lord of the Manor. The family Balby de Vernon who remained the owners until 1858 when the Julien family, whose origins go back to the 16th Century in the region of Minerve, bought the Château, built in its present form in the 16th Century.
Château Villerambert-Julien - Caunes-Minervois
The vineyard of Château Villerambert-Julien stretches over 76 hectares – 190 acres – gathered around a 16th Century castle called “Bastide”, including a main building flanked with 4 towers, a chapel of the same period, a yard with its tasting cellar, a “chais”, a vat house and the farming buildings...

  The Soil

The size of the vineyard has developed continuously over the years since it covered 50 hectares in 1989 and covers 76 today. The added 26 hectares were acquired to improve the geographical unity of the estate but always with the same rigid philosophy of only acquiring land of similarly great quality. This because it is the “Terroir” which creates the uniqueness and great individuality of Château Villerambert-Julien. There are no less than eleven different geological soil compositions and each one of these, allied to the meteorological conditions of the year, brings a specific and individual contribution to each year’s wine.

A new splendid tasting room has just been installed in the renovated chapel of the Château. The whole range of the wines of Château Villerambert-Julien can be tasted there and will be introduced by a competent person speaking French, English, German and Spanish. The shop located in an other vaulted room will enable you to buy the current vintages as well as older wines.

Minervois

A.O.C. Minervois

The Minervois is one of the most ancient vineyards of the Mediterranean region. Indeed, its land was chosen by the Romans as providing ideal conditions for the first vines they planted in Languedoc Roussillon. Its name comes from the ancient city of Minerve, a stronghold built by the Romans and dedicated to the goddess Minerva. Since that time, many amphora shards and vestiges of cellars have been discovered, testimony to the importance of this vineyard. The region, austere in winter and redolent with sunshine in summer, has survived over the centuries its invasions by barbarians, Arabs and Christians. The essence of Minervois la Livinière, as in so many Midi appellations, is the blend; a marriage of different grape varieties that adds subtle nuance of flavour to the whole. Natural alcohol level must reach a minimum of 12% without enrichment (so no chaptalisation) and maximum yield is a modest 45 hl/ha. Ageing may be in barrel or vat, and unlike basic Minervois, the wine must be bottled at source, so cannot be sent off to a négociant elsewhere in France...

La Draille - Caunes-Minervois

At the foot of the Montagne Noire, between vines and shrubs, Caunes-Minervois, a beautiful medieval village, famous for the quality of its red marble that was used to famous monuments such as the Grand Trianon at Versailles, Opera Garnier and the capitole of Toulouse, to name a few. But Caunes-Minervois is also known for its former Benedictine Abbey, founded in 780. The abbey church with two bell towers, richly decorated with red marble from Caunes, has a wonderful romance apse from the 11th century, and a nice working portal from the 13th century. Apart from this architectural gem is also a cloister from the 18th century, a tomb with the remains of the first Carolingian church and monastic buildings from the 17th century. After the visit of the abbey the time to stroll through the streets of Caunes-Minervois, surrounded by medieval and Renaissance houses. This is also the opportunity to admire the facades of the gorgeous old buildings, such as hotel Sicard from the 14th century, and hotel Alibert in the 15th and 16th centuries. Notre-Dame du Cros at the Trausse road just outside Caunes Minervois should definitely not be missed. After about 400 to 500 meters on this road, outside the village, turn left at the intersection, then please skip the narrow road up along the water, leading to the Notre Dame du Cros (former pilgrimage). Right at the end there is a parking near the chapel, after approximately 2 km. Visit the chapel of Notre Dame du Cros, 12th century, built near a so-called "miraculous" source on the south side of the gorges in the valley of the river Cros...

La Cantine du Curé - Caunes-Minervois

One of my favourite places in Caunes Minervois is La Cantine du Cure in the shadow of the Abbey. There is always a friendly face to welcome you and a little music keeping you company in the background. The staff are friendly and helpful and attentive and will assist you with your choice of fare - there is normally a choice of 3 or 4 tapas for €5 and perhaps 4 plats du jour (plate of the day)for €10 and normally ice cream for dessert.....

Hôtel d'Alibert

Hôtel d'Alibert - Caunes-Minervois

A vast residence Renaissance in the middle of the village of Caunes-Minervois. Eight rooms barely for nights of a peace which they had forgotten. For dinners under stars, courtyard in the sculpted galleries. Where, during winter, corner of a big chimney. An incomparable list of regional wines. The tracery of the alleyways which lead towards the very close garrigue, then of tracks of walkings in the Black Mountain. The sea that less than one hour; and Carcassonne, almost visible on the skyline. Everywhere around, the country Minervois. Will the hotel - restaurant of Alibert soon have the pleasure of receiving you?
