Château Trillol - Cucugnan

Owned by the Sichel family since 1990, Château Trillol is perched high up in the foothills of the Pyrenees at an altitude of 400 metres (1,312ft) in the AOC Corbières winegrowing region. The mysterious Cathar castles close by, with their thousand years of history, add to the majesty of this outstanding, unspoiled natural environment.

Down in the valley, the picturesque and magnificently restored village of Cucugnan was made famous by Alphonse Daudet’s well-known story, Le Curé de Cucugnan (The Priest of Cucugnan). A unique place to visit!

The Sichel family has undertaken a long-term project of expansion and replanting and the estate now boasts 40 hectares of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan in two distinct terroirs,Termenès and Quéribus.

The altitude of the vines (1,312ft and 656ft) means that the grapes ripen slowly, giving them time to absorb the peppery aromas of the neighbouring garrigue scrubland, and to develop length and complexity around a magnificently balanced structure.

  Specialties

Peter Sichel, one of the eminent members of the British Bordeaux wine trade, first came to the Corbières in the late 1980s and had a coup de foudre for a bergerie at the foot of Peyrepertuse, which he bought as a holiday home. He then realised that there was terrific potential in the vineyards, and so vineyards were bought and the first wines made in 1990. Sadly Peter died in 1998 before he could achieve the full potential of the project but Château Trillol is now part of the Maison Sichel, and has been run by Henri and Martine Guiot since 1995.

The Corbières is not an easy place to grow vines. Although essentially Mediterranean, the climate is extreme; the wind is a problem as it can reach speeds of 100 kms per hour or more. The vineyards lie at an altitude is 300 metres and the soil a mixture of clay and limestone. Altogether they have 40 hectares of vines, in about 65 different parcels in two main plots, by Quéribus and towards Peyrepertuse.. Sadly time did not allow us to visit the vineyards. They practice lutte raisonée, and are considering converting to organic viticulture. The grape varieties are the classics of the Languedoc, Carignan, Grenache, Syrah, Cinsaut, mostly about 25 years old, as they replanted extensively when the vineyards were bought, and for whites, Roussanne, but no longer any Marsanne – it was in the wrong place - and some 100 year old Macabeu. The cellar is functional, a large shed with the usual concrete and stainless steel vats, and barriques.

"A splendid Grenache Syrah blend from high in the hills of Corbières, a stunning corner of south west France. Château Trillol was awarded France's highest accolade for food and wine in 2013, the Prix d'Excellence in its Concours Général Agricole. Awarded by the French Ministry of Agriculture for consistently high performance over several years, there are only seven Prix d'Excellence each year for seven categories out of a total of 20,000 entries. A deeply impressive award".

Corbières

A.O.P. Corbières

The Corbières is one of the wildest areas of France with one of the lowest population densities. It is picturesque with wine growing areas alternating with garigue and mountainous countryside. It is located mainly in the Aude département and partly in the Pyrénées-Orientales département. The River Aude borders the Corbières to the west and north. To the south is the River Agly and to the east the the Mediterranean Sea. The name Corbières comes from "cor" a pre-Celtic word meaning "rock" and "berre" from the River Berre which runs through Durban. The eastern part of the Corbières with its Etangs, borders the the Mediterranean Sea and is called the Corbières maritimes. It has its own distinctive climate and characteristic vegetation known as thermomediterranean vegetation...

Randonnée Le Château de Peyrepertuse - Rouffiac des Corbières

Peyrepertuse is a ruined fortress and one of the Cathar castles of the Languedoc located in the French Pyrénées in the commune of Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse, in the Aude département. It was associated with the Counts of Barcelona, later kings of Aragon. The name Peyrepetuse is derived from Pèirapertusa, Occitan, meaning Pierced Rock. The lower part of the castle was built on a strategic location by the kings of Aragon in the 11th Century and the higher part by the French King Louis IX later on, after the area was annexed to France. The two castles are linked together by a staircase. The castle lost importance as a strategic castle when the border between France and Spain was moved in 1659, causing the castle to be abandoned. The castle ruins are impressive, set high on a defensive crag. From the approach road it is difficult to see where the rock stops and the castle starts. The castle was built in the 11th century on a site dominating the Corbières and the sea. The main part, resembles the prow of a ship, running along the top of an 800m (2,600 ft) high crag. It houses the church of Sainte-Marie and the governor's residence...
