The souls of eight generations of winemakers are flowing through Richard Labene’s veins. These winemakers were attached to their Minervois as the qualities of the land satisfied their ambitions of making a wine of character.

Freedom of creativity is widely appreciated on a global scale when the artist is well educated! And as a young 30 year old wine maker, Richard continues the challenging adventure marked by this long history.

In addition to his father’s Minervois origin, his mother’s father, from the Roussillon (region of Perpignan) came into the Minervois with art of orchard growing, the inheritance of sweet wine making and the spirit of the Catalonian.

From the old Grenache planted in the 1960s to the Merlot planted in the 1970s the Labene family was amongst the first to bottle their own wines. The techniques of vinification at low temperatures have been used for more than twenty years (a technical decision well advance for the time which enhances the fruity dimension of the wine), this combined with a deep knowledge of the land and wine plants enable a full bodied and solid wine.

  Specialties

Richard has chosen to continue the path of developing and structuring the work of his forefathers. At the end of the 90’s the sale of wine has changed and the Domaine is hosting a new spirit with enthusiasm. Although recognized as a wine Domaine, the brand Château St Mery is now showing the ambition of his winemaker. With a straightforward attitude using traditional methods, Richard creates modern wines. In the case of both his fruity and full-bodied wines, their characteristic is that they are easy to drink, round and do not require long ageing time.

The range is built as follows :
The top range, Exige
The traditional range (red, rose, white) of Château St Mery
The Roland Labene red
The fruity Vin de pays d’OC, red Merlot and Carbernet-Sauvignon and Rosé Carbernet-Sauvignon

Guided by nature Richard elaborates his wines according to the need of the plant and the evolution of his own taste. It is a never ending quest which required modesty, patience and determination. The wines of Château St Méry are not only for connoisseurs of fine wines but can be appreciated by all : open them up, breathe them, they are talking to you !

Minervois

A.O.C. Minervois

The Minervois is one of the most ancient vineyards of the Mediterranean region. Indeed, its land was chosen by the Romans as providing ideal conditions for the first vines they planted in Languedoc Roussillon. Its name comes from the ancient city of Minerve, a stronghold built by the Romans and dedicated to the goddess Minerva. Since that time, many amphora shards and vestiges of cellars have been discovered, testimony to the importance of this vineyard. The region, austere in winter and redolent with sunshine in summer, has survived over the centuries its invasions by barbarians, Arabs and Christians. The essence of Minervois la Livinière, as in so many Midi appellations, is the blend; a marriage of different grape varieties that adds subtle nuance of flavour to the whole. Natural alcohol level must reach a minimum of 12% without enrichment (so no chaptalisation) and maximum yield is a modest 45 hl/ha. Ageing may be in barrel or vat, and unlike basic Minervois, the wine must be bottled at source, so cannot be sent off to a négociant elsewhere in France...

The Grapes

The Grapes

There are thousands of grape varieties contributing to a vast array of different wine styles with each variety having its own distinct flavours and characteristics. Varieties can be made uniquely to make a wine, in whch case the wine is known as a varietal, or collectively with other varities, when the wine is known as a blend. The soils and ‘terroirs’ in the Aude area are very varied, from Schist, Sandstone, Marl, Gravel, Pebbles, Limestone, to Granit and Alluvial soil; thus making many marvelous and different styles of wine. Also in this massive area are many different grape varieties, the reds include Carignon, Cinsault, Granache Noir, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. The whites, Chardonnay, Granache blanc, Picpoul, Marsanne, Roussanne, Vermantino, Mauzac, Chenin and Clairette...
