The High Gothic style of the Cathedral of Saint-Just and Saint-Pasteur takes its inspiration from the great cathedrals of Northern France. Its most striking feature is its unique choir, with vaulting soaring to more than 40 metres.
It was built between 1272 and 1340 and remained unfinished because, in those troubled times, the Consuls refused to demolish the ramparts to provide stone to continue building.
The side chapel, dedicated to Our Lady of Bethlehem, has a 14th-century altar-piece in painted stone.
The Treasury, also known as the acoustic hall, displays a rich collection of liturgical objects, including ivories, gold and tapestries... |

Narbonne

Abbaye de fontfroide

Horreum Romain - Narbonne

The La Clape AOC is located where the Coteaux du Languedoc and Corbières appellations overlap and is well known for its vineyards that lie on a limestone outcropping that extends across the entire region. The region produces red, rose and white wines that are fully representative of the region and the reds show particularly well, often times considered a vin de garde. The majority of the wines of Gruissan are produced on the Clape. This little mountain, situated between Narbonne and Gruissan was an isle at the time of prehistoric man. The Clape, gets its name from the Occitan word « Clapas » meaning a pile of stones, and reaches a height of 214 m. The pine trees cover the slopes of the Clape. The garrigue covers the plateaux and the thyme, the rosemary and the lavender that invite you to promenade are what give the wines their character...

Vin de Pays d’Oc,
Vin de Pays de l’Aude |
|
Vin de Pays means 'country wine' to the French, but to outsiders it can mean New World with a French accent. These are the wines which the French authorities unreservedly allow to be labelled with the grape variety from which they were made. It is difficult to over-estimate the importance of this large and growing category of wines for the future of the French wine trade. The French themselves may have tended to see any Vin de Pays as distinctly inferior to any appellation contrôlée wine, whereas many of their customers abroad see the better Vins de Pays as good-value, user-friendly, sometimes high-quality non-conformist emissaries from the world's most revered wine producer....

A few kilometres from the Mediterranean, the Château de l'Hospitalet gives its 38 customised guest rooms and its sun-drenched swimming pool a stunning view over the surrounding vineyards. The "bistronomic" restaurant called the "H" is fully in keeping with its exceptional location by virtue of its architecture, reflecting the great wine-making traditio straight lines reminiscent of vine rows, natural, warm materials... While you wait for a table in the lounge bar, you may sample a few tapas, comfortably ensconced in an armchair you will be somewhat sorry to leave...

18-Holes.
18 Holes, Par 54, 1.200 metres, 1312 yards. Built in 1988 by Jean Pierre Basurco

Sainte Rose, and although there is not a full golf course there is a very good
eighteen-hole pitch and putt course, a driving range, pro shop and a clubhouse.
It is really of more interest to holidaymakers and beginners than to serious
golfers, but professional lessons are available, and competitions are held
regularly...

The Massif de la Clape – ‘stone’ in local dialect - was,
until recent geological time, an actual island. This insularity, still apparent
in the landscape, has given rise to a particularly rich and original variety of
plant and animal life. Today, the La Clappe Heights remain one of those unusual,
spellbound places where modem man can still feel, with ahnost every step he
takes, the imprint of his long-gone ancestors. The Oeil Doux is a natural
waterhole surrounded by cliffs with an abrupt eastern face overhanging the
surface 130 feet below (40m). The cliff is made of hard fissured limestone whose
crevices are full of red clay; it was formed during the middle geological era.
The north side, less steep, is made of marly limestone from an older geological
age and is particularly rich in fossile deposits, notably Orbolitines
(Mesorbitolna texana), Brachypodes, Lamellibranches and sea urchins (dating from
the Clansayesian period). The presence of this hole at this site can be
explained by the fragility of the wider area which displays many faults; two of
them major. The water in the hole is salty : the salinity, as well as the level,
varies with the rainfall and the movements of the Mediterranean just a mile
(1,500m) away. The whole zone is part of a submerged karstic formation...
