Campsite La Porte d'Autan - Saissac
The village of Saissac and its castle (or château fort) dominates the rocky headland and the ravine of the river Vernassonne, overlooking the plain of Carcassonne at an important strategic position at the entry of the Black Mountains (Montagnes Noires)...

  Specialities

Saissac is mentioned in a legal document (an Acte) from the Abbey of Montolieu in 958, and again in a text of 960.

The village is typical of the Black Mountains and is built between the ravines of the rivers Aiguebelle and Vernassonne, just above their confluence.

Things to see in the village include the porte d'Autan, a lavoire built in granite, a second covered lavoire and a fine echauguette.

Vestiges of the city walls (enceinte) are still visible around the ancient village. These walls date from the Fourteenth century, the same period that the castle of Saissac was restored...

Cabardès

A.O.C. Cabardès

The Cabardès region is situated to the west of Languedoc and to the south of the central massif, a geologist's dream, balanced between east and west, the sun and the coolness, the heathland and the mountain. It is here that the winds cross. They bring the intense mediterranean heat necessary for southern "cépages" (grape types) such as syrah and grenache, and the cool atlantic humidity for the ocean "cépages": merlot, cabernet-sauvignon, cabernet-franc, cot and fer-servadou, to prosper. The vineyards and wines of Cabardès have been recognized as AOC since february 1999. The quality of the grapes, the wine-making, the blending of the "cépages" and the keeping of the wines has allowed us to obtain the best balance between fruit and structure, fullness and complexity, intensity and elegance. Cabardès assembles 30 châteaux and domaines over 500 productive hectares spread amongst 18 villages. 20000 hectolitres are produced each year,of which 60% are exported....

Vin de Pays d’Oc,
Vin de Pays de l’Aude

Vin de Pays d’Oc, Vin de Pays de l’Aude

Vin de Pays means 'country wine' to the French, but to outsiders it can mean New World with a French accent. These are the wines which the French authorities unreservedly allow to be labelled with the grape variety from which they were made. It is difficult to over-estimate the importance of this large and growing category of wines for the future of the French wine trade. The French themselves may have tended to see any Vin de Pays as distinctly inferior to any appellation contrôlée wine, whereas many of their customers abroad see the better Vins de Pays as good-value, user-friendly, sometimes high-quality non-conformist emissaries from the world's most revered wine producer....

Arboretum du Lampy - Saissac

The Arboretum du Lampy, also known as the Arboretum du Domaine du Lampy-Neuf, is a private arboretum located in Le Lampy-Neuf, Saissac, Aude, Languedoc-Roussillon, France. It is open daily. The arboretum was first established in the 19th century as the Canal du Midi administration's experimental site for exotic trees. After forty years of neglect, restoration began in 1995. Older trees include araucarias, Lawson cypresses, sequoiadendrons, thujas, and Virginia tulip trees; these have been augmented with new plantings of cedar of Lebanon, Gingko biloba, liquidambar, Negundo maple, olive, etc....

Lac du Lampy

Lac du Lampy - Saissac

The Lampy-neuf dam which was completed in 1782 is the second water reserve for the Canal after the Saint Ferréol Lake. Construction of the dam was necessary to supply the Canal de la Robine between Narbonne and Port la Nouvelle. The dam and the lake constituted part of the extension of the ingenious system of the Canal du Midi, one century after it opened. On the edges of the lake, the Arboretum du Lampy tells the stories of the Fables de la Fontaine in their natural setting, surrounded by centuries-old trees....

Revel

Revel

Surrounded by sunflowers and poppies. The town of Revel, which is in the east of the Haute-Garonne department of south-west France, is a market town lying on a flat plain, resplendent in early summer with sunflowers and poppies. Corn and garlic are also grown here, agriculture being a dictator of the changing seasonal landscapes as always in rural France. A market town par excellence! Its Saturday extravaganza truly is a superb example of a French general market at its very best. Revel has a huge Saturday morning market which is attended by both locals and visitors, some of whom have travelled considerable distances to savour the atmosphere and the goods on offer here. The hub of the market, the food and fresh produce stalls, are situated in the central market square, which is a gorgeous covered arcade, typical in its bastide styling, yet more beautiful than most. The market spreads out around the town, but the heart is most definitely here in this very traditional square...

Montolieu

Montolieu

Montolieu is a small, pretty village, which prides itself as being a 'village of books and graphic arts', and is a good place to browse through old books - there are perhaps 15 bokshops in the village, as well as a museum on the subject, and the possibility to learn about bookbinding. Stop anyway, even if you aren't interested in books, just for an amble around the village, in an attractive setting on a rocky outcrop between two rivers.
