Auberge du Somail - Saint-Nazaire-d'Aude

A restaurant on the waterfront, overlooking the typical Somail bridge and under the generous shade of century-old plane trees... The perfect setting for lounging on the terrace and watching the boaters on the Canal du Midi go by! The "Bistro" décor matches the standards of the dishes made using fresh local products only, as is the serene atmosphere that reigns over this place. On the menu: Gazpacho of seasonal vegetables, Cuttlefish with parsley, Prawns in pesto, Skirt steak, home-made foie gras platter.
Randonnée Le Somail - Le Somail
Le Somail is undoubtedly the most picturesque village along the stretch of the Canal du Midi. This 18th-century hamlet with its arched bridge, with old stone houses, overlooking the quays terraces full of colorful restaurants, art galleries and a floating grocery store where the mail boats, which carried to Toulouse in 4 days of Agde, had their stop. The travelers used these stops to get from one city to travel to the other, a much easier way than an overland journey. At each gate they had to transfer to another boat. Loaded like mules they had upstairs and downstairs...
In summer, we recommend you to reserve a table overlooking the Canal du Midi or to secure a place in the shade of the oak, especially during the musical meals, usually every Thursday in the summer. At Auberge du Somail, the patron welcomes you always with a smile and it's a pleasure to be here! Le Daily menu varies per day, Monday stuffed vegetables, Tuesday boeuf bourguignon. Do not miss the sèches à la rouille on Thursdays and Sundays the couscous!

The Auberge menu is also enticing; As a starter, gazpacho of fresh vegetables with its traditional artisanal sorbet à la roquette followed by seiche a la plancha accompanied by an ink risotto and tomato Provencal. The food is fresh from local producteurs. Other tempting dishes: frog legs, carpaccio of monkfish and prawns with pesto or pareillade auberge.

And for meat lovers, they are spoiled for choice at once: beautiful piece of beef, pork or a whole duck. We also find the homemade foie gras and cassoulet. We also liked the decor of the dining room with its bistro furniture appreciative. A friendly and gourmet place to discover the grim charms of Le Somail at your own pace...

Minervois

A.O.C. Minervois

The Minervois is one of the most ancient vineyards of the Mediterranean region. Indeed, its land was chosen by the Romans as providing ideal conditions for the first vines they planted in Languedoc Roussillon. Its name comes from the ancient city of Minerve, a stronghold built by the Romans and dedicated to the goddess Minerva. Since that time, many amphora shards and vestiges of cellars have been discovered, testimony to the importance of this vineyard. The region, austere in winter and redolent with sunshine in summer, has survived over the centuries its invasions by barbarians, Arabs and Christians. The essence of Minervois la Livinière, as in so many Midi appellations, is the blend; a marriage of different grape varieties that adds subtle nuance of flavour to the whole. Natural alcohol level must reach a minimum of 12% without enrichment (so no chaptalisation) and maximum yield is a modest 45 hl/ha. Ageing may be in barrel or vat, and unlike basic Minervois, the wine must be bottled at source, so cannot be sent off to a négociant elsewhere in France...

Randonnée Le Somail - Le Somail - Saint-Nazaire-d'Aude

A beautiful signposted walking tour in and around Le Somail, that takes in all the sights Le Somail is a large village that exists thanks to the Canal du Midi. This port was built as a stop for the trade and immediately enjoyed a great prosperity. Today it is one of the most beautiful spots of the Canal du Midi, with la Chapelle, le Pont, la Maison d'Éclusier and much entertainment that it has inspired and attracted many artists. We had been told about it and had seen a photo of the pretty stone bridge spanning the Canal du Midi. And it is when we reach the banks and advance toward the heart, the port, that we understand the wonder in the eyes who had insisted we come here. Here everything stops suddenly, everything comes to a halt on arrival as if the Canal du Midi would immediately hypnotize us into taking on its rhythm, serene, calm. The place is calm and has been since its construction 300 years ago, at the same time as the Canal du Midi. At the time it served as a “staging-post”, an inevitable stop on the long and tiring trips of the day...

Canal du Midi

Canal du Midi

The Canal du Midi is one of the greatest engineering achievements of the modern age, providing the model for the flowering of technology that led directly to the Industrial Revolution and the modern technological age. It represents a significant period in European history, that of the development of water transport as a result of mastery of hydraulic civil engineering. It combines with its technological innovation a concern for high aesthetic architectural and landscape design that has few parallels...

L'Oulibou is a fascinating place to visit. Only 3.5 km from Mailhac, it produces some award winning oils and olives which can be sampled in the very mill where they have been made. The 'lucque' is one of the main olives of the Languedoc Roussillon area and it under goes some magical transformation within the walls of this traditional mill. 2 kilometres from Bize, just off the main road between Beziers and Carcassonne, you will find l’Oulibo, a cooperative that produces some of the best olives and olive oils in France. Bize is part of the Minervois region that includes the village of Minerve 10kms to the north which was the site of a famous siege by Simon de Montfort and the consequent martyrdom of the Cathars. Nearby are Beziers (35 minutes) and Narbonne (25 minutes) with cathedrals, excellent markets, shops, museums, and much more...
